Planning a beach day? Start with these nearby options and check conditions before entering the water. No beach is safe in every condition.

1. Choose your beach

Consider El Escambrón, a reef-protected beach in San Juan, or Balneario de Carolina, which offers lifeguard services. Confirm that a lifeguard is on duty when you arrive or Ocean Park Beach.

2. Check Swim Safe PR before leaving

Open Swim Safe PR on your phone or use its app. Find your destination’s coastal area on the map and check the forecast date and rip current risk. High risk means stay out of the water. Low risk does not mean no risk. Consult the National Weather Service beach forecast for additional guidance.

3. Follow local instructions

Read posted warnings and ask the lifeguard where swimming is permitted. Swim with a buddy and follow the lifeguard’s directions, even if the app shows different conditions. If no lifeguard is present, enjoy the beach from the sand. For emergencies, call 911. Swim Safe PR safety guidance.

Enjoy the sunshine and make checking conditions part of every beach day!
